So earlier this week, I began planning for my guided reading groups. I haven't officially started any groups but have been seeing children here and there and working on making sure centers were running smoothly. My hope is to begin slowly seeing official groups very soon. Even if it's just one a day or a few a week as we slowly move into this routine. As I was looking at data I had collected regarding letter ID, book knowledge and high frequency word recognition - I knew that I wanted my students to have more practice at home. Inspired by my beautiful daughter I created this pocket chart (or table top) game to give her more practice.
She LOVES Frozen so I knew this ice princess theme would be perfect! I thought more about making things fun and engaging for young children. Children are motivated to learn if their interest is peaked. Soooooo....I not only created an ice princess themed sight word game, I created three more!!!!!
I gave my students the choice this past Friday regarding which game they took home and they were ecstatic! I heard a lot of "Mrs. Bohnert I can't wait to play my princess game!" and "Whoa! Look at the superhero!" Happiness!
Their excitement caught on and this weekend I worked and created another four more! I then made ALL of them EDITABLE! You can add your own name, words, letters, numbers, number words, etc. I wanted teachers and students to have options when practicing sight words. Who doesn't love options?!
I want to point out that each game has the same objective and structure to the games. This is very purposeful. I wanted my young students to get into a routine when playing these games and feel confident when playing them. Having confidence encourages students to take risks and try more, meaning MORE LEARNING!!!
